Things I did instead of writing…

So last week I made this very public declaration of my resolutions for the new year:

  1. Finish my novel
  2. Write every day
  3. Maintain this blog
  4. Continue kickboxing

I can honestly say that I was relatively successful at #4. I went to kickboxing twice last week. I meant to go three times, but I stayed up too late messing around with this blog and overslept. I intended to go on my day off to make up for the missing day, but couldn’t quite manage that either. I did make it to class this morning and I do plan to go Friday and Saturday. I may also go with my friend on Tuesday. We’ll see what she can manage.

Obviously I wasn’t super successful at #3 because I haven’t blogged in over week. This is unacceptable behavior from a person who is trying to brand themselves as a writer…

Which brings us to #2… write every day. I was going to say that I really tried. I was going to go into the details of how I came home from work every day last week and tickled the keys of my laptop with tantalizing ideas towards my novel. I was going to mention that I fell asleep at my laptop: I woke up with the imprint of computer keys on my left cheek and three pages worth of the letter “x” in my Scrivener’s document. I was going to mention how I had to battle my cat in my quest to gain control of my hands and my keyboard. I was going to mention all of these things. Yes, all of the above statements are true. What is also true… I did not actually write every day like I wanted to. I just kept opening the document, writing a few questions, staring at the questions hoping for an answer to spring forth from my brain, then falling asleep during my “pondering” stage of the process. I still have very few answers as to how I will proceed with my romantic comedy novel. I have a feeling I still haven’t asked myself the right questions.

And on to #1. Since I have all year to technically accomplish this task, I’m not too upset that I didn’t manage to finish this novel in a week. I am a bit annoyed that I am still having trouble mapping out my story, but I will keep plugging away at that. I just have to figure out when to turn the tables.

Things I did instead of writing: I played video games. I played Gran Turismo Wednesday and Thursday when I got home from work. I also played Kingdom Hearts on Monday night.

I fell asleep most nights before I got very far. I usually do my best writing at night. I also tend to do my best sleeping at night. This week I will find a way to do everything. I will try to make sure I get a good hour of undisturbed writing every night.

I went to the gym and worked out with a friend on one of my best potential writing days this week. We discussed a litany of things that needed to be discussed and caught up on. This is sort of a scheduled friend date. This should remain, Sunday nights are off the table as writing days unless my gym buddy cancels.

I went drinking with friends I hadn’t spent much time with in a while. This was a necessary evening for reconnection and camaraderie. I probably could have been writing during this, but chose to spend the time making memories with awesome people.

I am going to have work harder to accomplish my goals this week. So far at least I managed to write this blog tonight. That dips into two of my resolutions. Tomorrow I will have to open that Scrivener’s document again and stare at a blinking cursor waiting for me to answer the questions I’ve asked of myself.
